Camtasia, which I'm suggesting we use for our tutorial, has a number of short 'how to' tutorials on their website. They are short and to the point. Take a look.

I really like the way in which audio - voice, music, text, and graphics are combined in the following tutorial - it is from ProShow - a program that I have used in the past to make movies, on a PC. It is now available on the web for Mac/PC - I'm going to have to check it out!

Here is another style of tutorial, combines simple pictograms/icons, animation, and voice over! Very professional

Sait Tutorial Examples
These are pretty professional looking but provide a potpourri of graphic usage in a tutorial context: different configurations of media such as animated text, choice of voice on/off, video/series of graphics etc.
Gives exceptional examples to guide choice of complexity for a tutorial!

DVD Studio Pro Tutorial: Using stories when authoring DVDs
Studio Pro Tutorial
  • uses screen shots with voice over
  • explains as carries out actions
  • narration quite clear and simply for user
  • one screen throughout...part of the application so makes sense with narration/instruction
  • no animation only 'see' the actions to be learned by user: video of final product sample shown on same scrren
  • very detailed step by step and offers explanations/reasons for actions.
  • speaks out thoughts
  • 10 mins long
  • Clear image, but much to look at, due to application of course!
  • no animated character...just could see the pointer as actions are carried out
  • opening music clip and image

Liked: Ability to save and rewind and re-watch whenever desired; appreciated clear, friendly speech and simply language use...explains any tech jargon; because posted on YoTube could enlarge, liked lack of distractions (Music, sound effects, flashing graphics and the like!)

How to Make a DVD Using DVD Studio Pro 4
Make a DVD
  • uses whole image of computer on desk
  • has text flash-ups
  • has person's hand indicating and gesturing
  • voice over narration
  • has zoom in feature
  • sometimes we see the person's friendly face
  • otherwise similar idea to one above (Studio Pro Tutorial)

Liked: zoom in feature; textual reminders
Didn't like: constant hand gestures and occasional face and body inclusions; far view of computer screen; frenetic narration and squeaky chair!

Fabric Origami Box Tutorial
DIY Tutorials
  • color photographic images
  • Step by step accompanying explanatory and instructional text
  • linked vocabulary as needed or definition/explanation
  • access to further tutorials
  • place for comments/questions/clarification

Liked: good size, clear and zoomed in images...real images; text easy to understand and friendly; linked ideas and ability to get in touch for questions and the like; access to more tutorials
Didn't like: wondered how easy to follow the 'in between' steps that we don't get to see

check_marking_pc_1600_clr.pngAdobe Photoshop Elements
Website: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/photoshopelements/ articles/tutorial_index.html
  • screen shots/videos with voice over
  • short -around 2 minutes
  • includes: view more like this
  • short textual description above the video box
  • video has controls for pause/play/rewind/volume
  • music at beginning, some with music as background
  • intro slide with music/logo
  • states problem ... "Sometimes .... "
  • "I'll show you today ..."

Liked: clear voice; ability to pause; being able to see the process that was being discussed

Didn't like: the video I watched didn't seem to have a way to maximize the screen - so it was a little difficult to see. I think that others do maximize though.

Twitter in Plain English - Commoncraft
Website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o

  • uses line drawings manipulated on the screen with hands flashing in and out to manipulate at times or to point to specific items
  • runs through the process - sort of like a user case example
  • short - 2:25
  • http://commoncraft.com/ - other video examples
Like: simplicity of the design; brevity of the video; personalization of the example

Here are a couple of video tutorial examples, one on Google sketchup and the other on Jing:

I think video games are worth a look in this critique as well. In the first link below, you'll find a video walkthrough on an Xbox 360 arcade game called Limbo. The next link is a walkthrough for the same game but without the video component. There are still images along with reams of text. The third link is a walkthrough for a different game called Star Tropics for the Nintendo Entertainment system. It is entirely text-based.

Hello Virticues’
Here are some ideas I have been thinking over the week, we of course decide and can pick the one everyone agrees on…

Portion to be used as a tutorial: How to edit a video and/or how to edit /record sound’(a dialogue in our case)

In my opinion , this is a vital part of our Virticue , since parent/adult are taking videos all the time to record the best displayed behaviour, they would have to edit to summarize the final product for the aspergers child to model . Here is when we could present a tutorial on ‘how to edit a video’ and or ‘how to edit /record sound’(a dialogue in our case with the video)

1. I liked the tutorial because : http://www.stormthecastle.com/mainpages/videogametutorial/tutorial_videogame2.htm
Reasons:
a)It has the ability to allow the user to not only explain steps as screen shots step by step with a narrative explaining it but also allows / guides the user to download the required software, Install, Run and again continue with the tutorial on the next step.
b) So now the user can not only learn how to edit but editing could be simplified by allowing the user to download an app/ software to make editing simpler….
Here is a link to an editing software, which could be incorporated in the tutorial…

2. Did not like:
One has to Continue to page…
We may want to say skip download and continue …
